Price Rule: X for Y (3 for $5)

  1. Overview
  2. Retail POS
  3. Price Rule: X for Y (3 for $5)

Price rules are powerful ways to encourage certain customer behavior and leverage your vendor relationships or fulfill requirements in certain retail programs (Red Bull and Pepsi/Coke are famous for this!).

Let's set up a 3 for $5 deal on Powerade. The regular retail price on this $2.49 each.

Step 1: Do the Math

The first thing we want to do is know what our price needs to be per item. Grab your calculator and type in 3/5 and you'll get $1.666666 which we're going to change to $1.67. This discount program will move the price from $2.49 to $1.67 each.

Step 2: Set the Conditions

We need the POS to automaticaly apply this price rule as long as the conditions are met:

  • Condition 1: Minimum Purchase Quantity
Minimum purchase quantity is 3 - this can be 3 of the same item, 3 different items, or somewhere in-between.
  • Condition 2: Limited to Certain Items
The wonderful thing about this price rule is that it can work on a category level or on individual item level. In this case, our merchant doesn't have a "Powerade" category, so we're going to need to select the items.

Step 3: Create the Price Rule

Now that we've done the brain work, let's create our price rule.

  1. Navigate to Price/Discount Rules in your back office.
  2. Click + New Price/Discount Rule

  3. Name your price rule anything you'd like. For this one, we'll do "Powerade 3 for $5"
  4. From the Price Rule Type dropdown, select All Cart Items / Buy X, set Price to Amount on Matched Items
  5. In the Products box, type "Powerade" and it will populate with all items that match. Hit Enter or click each item you'd like to be part of the price rule:
  6. In Amount we're going to enter the amount from Step 1 - $1.67. This sets the fixed price of the item to this amount as long as the condition is met for quantity.
  7. In Buy X put the minimum quantity needed to trigger this rule. For our example in 3 for $5, we'll put 3.
  8. Click Save Changes.

Voila! You have a Buy any 3 Powerades for $5 price rule!

Other Options

There are a lot of different customizations. Here are some of the more popular options:

  • Timed Rule: If you want the price rule to only be active on a certain day or time, you can choose the Days of Week When Price Rule is Active and Hours When Rule is Active. Here is what you would set if you wanted this rule to only be active between 3pm and 5pm on Tuesdays:
  • Limited Time Only: Let's say this Powerade deal is only for Halloween plus the day before and the day after. We'd set the Date Start and the Date End:
  • Limit to Certain Customer Groups: Suppose I have a VIP customer list. This can be managed through the powerful loyalty system that comes built into our point of sale. Let's say I have a program where once a customer has spent $500 they become a VIP. I set the system to automatically assign them to the VIP customer group once this happens. I only want to give this amazing Powerade discount to my VIP customer group. Here's how I do this:
    1. Get the Group ID: Go over to Customers on the left menu and choose Customer Groups. Look for the ID of the customer group you want to choose. In this case, our VIP group is ID #2.
    2. Once we have our Group ID, we go back over to our price rule and enter that value into the Customer Group IDs. You can allow multiple customer groups to benefit by entering all of those IDs separated by a comma. Alternatively, if you wanted every group EXCEPT for certain groups to benefit, you'd simply put hose excluded in the Excl Group IDs.
